The right time

There are several elements to consider when choosing a time to ask your manager for a salary increase:

Every 12 months: A year is a reasonable amount of time in which to develop skills, complete projects and make significant positive changes to teams and procedure. While the calendar should not dictate your request, it is a conventional and practical period in which to consider asking your manager to reflect on your achievements.

Give adequate notice: Book time with your manager in advance, and never squeeze this discussion at the end of another, unrelated meeting. Show that you take the conversation seriously and book a reasonable amount of time in which to talk through this important request.

Avoid busy periods or when stress is high: Avoid asking for a salary increase if your team and manager are busy with important, time-consuming projects. You will be doing yourself a disservice, as tensions may be higher than usual, and you might not get the time this conversation requires. While you cannot control this, it is worth being aware of.
